Celebrating 90 Years of Innovation
2021 marked a major milestone for Airstream as it celebrated its 90th anniversary. In 1931, Airstream founder Wally Byam opened the first Airstream trailer factory in Culver City, California. Today, 90 years later, Airstream continues to honor his legacy of quality, craftsmanship, and iconic design.
In 1929, Wally Byam designed the first teardrop-shaped permanent shelter, complete with a stove and ice chest. It captured the attention of other travelers, prompting Wally to publish DIY guides for others to build their own. This passion led to the opening of a small trailer factory in 1931.
By 1936, Airstream introduced the Clipper—its first riveted aluminum, semi-monocoque trailer. The Clipper featured streamlined curves, insulated walls, luxurious wood interiors, and customizable layouts.
When the U.S. entered World War II, aluminum became a restricted material. Wally closed the factory and went to work in the aviation industry, gaining experience that would influence future Airstream designs. After the war, he resumed production with new insights and improved techniques.
As Airstream outgrew its California facility, Wally moved operations to Jackson Center, Ohio—where Airstreams are still built to this day, nearly 70 years later.
The Future and Beyond
Today, Airstream remains committed to quality, innovation, and craftsmanship. Its lineup has grown to include not just travel trailers but also Class B and B+ motorhomes. None of this would be possible without the generations of skilled men and women who hand-build every Airstream in the USA.
To honor this 90-year milestone, all traditional Airstream travel trailers built in 2021 feature a commemorative 90th anniversary badge. Mounted inside the main entry door, this badge serves as a tribute to the legacy, passion, and detail that go into every Airstream that rolls off the production line.
