Celebrating 90 Years of Innovation

2021 is a big milestone for Airstream as it celebrates its 90th anniversary. In 1931, Airstream founder Wally Byam opened the first Airstream trailer factory in Culver City, California. Today, 90 years later, we continue to honor his legacy of quality, craftsmanship, and the iconic Airstream design.

In 1929 Airstream founder Wally Byam designed the first teardrop-shaped permanent shelter complete with a stove and ice chest. It caught the eye of other travelers and Wally began publishing DIY guides for others to build this trailer. Eventually, Wally opened a small trailer factory in Culver City, California in 1931.

In 1936 Wally introduced the Airstream Clipper, Airstream’s first riveted aluminum, semi-monocoque trailer. The Clipper had streamlined curves, insulated walls, an interior with luxurious wood finishes, and customizable floor plans.

When the United States entered World War II, aluminum became a restricted material. Wally chose to close up shop and start work in the aviation industry. After the war, Wally resumed building Airstreams with the knowledge that he had gained while working in the aircraft industry.

As Airstream had begun to outgrow its California plant, Wally moved operations to Jackson Center, Nearly 70 years later, Airstream is still headquartered and producing Airstreams in Jackson Center.

The Future and Beyond

Today Airstream continues the commitment to quality and innovation and has expanded its lineup to include Class B and B+ motorhomes. This wouldn’t be possible without the generations of hard-working men and women who build every Airstream by hand right here in the USA.

To honor the 90th anniversary, all traditional travel trailers that are manufactured in 2021 will feature a commemorative 90th anniversary badge. This badge, located on the interior of the unit’s main door, celebrates the hard work and passion that is put into every Airstream that rolls off the line.
